Waternauts Winners of the 2022 BCWWA Student Design Competition

Congratulations Waternauts, winners of the 2022 BC Water & Waste Association (BCWWA) Student Design Competition (SDC). The winning team of ENVL students are: Parsa Mivehchi (team leader), Ben Alberga, Caelan Accili, Ramzi Hijazi, and Mohamed El Badrawy. Faculty Advisor: Marlene Chow and Consultant Advisor: Dr. Madjid Mohseni.

Four outstanding teams submitted design reports and presented an oral presentation to a panel of four judges. Teams were evaluated on their technical content, organization, delivery and overall presentation. The winning team developed a biosolids management strategy for the BCWWA SDC partner at Regional District of Nanaimo that included new infrastructure sized to manage all biosolids from the four wastewater treatment plants for the next 50 years. Features including beneficial re-use of residuals and biogas were key components of a successful strategy developed by the students.

Team Waternauts will be presented with an award at the 50th Annual Conference & Trade Show in Victoria, BC, May 15th-17th . The winning team will also compete at the Water Environment Federation’s Technical Exhibition and Conference (WEFTEC) Student Design Competition in New Orleans, Louisiana October 8th to 12th, 2022.
